José Martí

José Julián Martí Pérez (1853-1895) was a poet, essayist, journalist, philosopher, politician, and a key figure in Hispanic American literature. He was born in Havana, Cuba. From a young age, he became involved in the struggle for Cuba's independence from Spain, which led to his exiles and imprisonment. He lived in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, and mainly in New York, United States, where he organized the Cuban Revolutionary Party. His literary works, such as "Versos Sencillos" and "Ismaelillo", as well as his essays and journalistic articles, established him as a pillar of modernism. He returned to Cuba in 1895 to join the war of independence and died in combat in Dos Ríos. He is considered the National Hero of Cuba.
