Jules-Sébastien-César Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842) was a French explorer, naval officer, and hydrographer. He undertook several notable expeditions, especially to the Pacific region and Antarctica. He circumnavigated the world aboard the ship Astrolabe and extensively explored the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, and numerous Pacific islands. He is credited with significant contributions to cartography and natural science. He died in a railway accident in Meudon.
