Discover César Franchisena's innovative and unique avant-garde compositional language through this exhaustive analytical-interpretative study by Teodora María Inés Caramello.
This present work focuses on establishing and describing the unique avant-garde compositional language developed and implemented by César Franchisena. To this end, an exhaustive analytical-interpretative study of his musical output is proposed, specifically covering his works for solo piano, his compositions for various instrumental ensembles that include piano, and his concertos for solo piano with chamber and symphonic orchestras. César Franchisena, an essential figure in Argentine music, was born in the province of Chaco on September 3, 1923, although he consolidated himself as an adopted Cordoban, the city where he sadly passed away on January 1, 1992. Recognized as an archetypal Latin American in spirit and work, he stood out as one of the most influential members of the Asociación Nueva Música (ANM). His leadership was palpable when he presided over the Córdoba branch, from which he played a crucial role in the dissemination and promotion of a vast repertoire of contemporary music, both from national and international composers. Franchisena's work began to resonate in the Argentine musical scene starting in the 1950s. His profound academic imprint began in 1956 when he joined the Faculty of Arts of the National University of Córdoba, an institution to which he dedicated more than three decades of his life. His vision and commitment were fundamental for the creation of the Composition I, II, and III chairs in 1972, and subsequently, in 1977, he assumed the founding headship of the innovative Electronics Laboratory. In recognition of his invaluable career and contributions, he was distinguished as emeritus and consulting professor in 1992, the same year of his death. In his aesthetic proposal, Franchisena aligned himself with both European and North American avant-garde compositional currents, positioning himself as a key reference of musical avant-garde in the local context. This commitment to experimentation was concretely manifested in his innovative handling of the time-space variable within his compositions, where he placed special emphasis on the manipulation of articulations, sound textures and densities, and underlying formal structures. The close professional and friendly relationship between the researcher and César Franchisena was the main motivation for undertaking this study. This personal and academic bond awakened the need to further deepen the understanding and analysis of his extensive and significant compositional work, seeking to expand existing knowledge about his legacy.
