Francisco Pí y Margall was a Spanish politician, philosopher, historian, and jurist, president of the Executive Power of the First Spanish Republic in 1873. He was born in Barcelona on April 19, 1824, and died in Madrid on November 29, 1901. He was the main theoretician of federalism in Spain. He went into exile in France after the Revolution of 1866 and returned with the Glorious Revolution of 1868. He defended the ideal of a federal, social, and democratic republic. He was also a prolific writer and thinker.
