Sinopsis

'Wicked Problems' are pervasive and complex global challenges that confront humanity and the planet, impacting both present and future generations. These issues are profoundly difficult, often seeming impossible to resolve, due to their interconnected nature, lack of clear boundaries, and evolving characteristics. Addressing them invariably requires not just bold and creative thinking, but also experimental and sometimes unconventional solutions. The term 'wicked' highlights the mischievous and often perverse quality of these problems, where proposed interventions frequently lead to unintended negative consequences or even exacerbate the original symptoms. This wide-ranging and innovative book encourages readers to fundamentally rethink the role and relevance of archaeology, positioning it as a fresh, highly pertinent, and distinctly future-oriented discipline. It thoroughly examines some of the novel and impactful ways that archaeological practice, alongside cultural heritage management, can contribute meaningfully to resolving some of the world's most pressing 'wicked problems,' which are also commonly referred to as critical global challenges. With dedicated chapters covering critical areas such as climate change, the pervasive issue of environmental pollution, the promotion of health and wellbeing, systemic social injustice, and the multifaceted impacts of conflict, the book utilizes a diverse array of examples from various contexts. It meticulously explains how, through studying both the deep past and contemporary conditions via an archaeological lens, in approaches that are creative, ambitious, and intrinsically both inter- and transdisciplinary, significant localized achievements and insights, termed 'small wins,' can be realized. Through the cumulative effect of these incremental successes, archaeologists are uniquely positioned to help mitigate some of the most urgent and complex 'wicked problems,' thereby contributing to the creation of a safer, healthier, and more stable world for all.
