Sinopsis

This academic volume undertakes an in-depth exploration of the musical landscapes, or 'musicscapes,' emerging in Contemporary Spain. It specifically examines how these musical contexts actively engage in the contestation, critique, and redefinition of the complex concept of 'Mediterraneidad' (Mediterraneaness). The book posits Mediterraneidad not as a fixed essence, but as a profoundly fluid, elusive, and multifaceted category encompassing sociological, cultural, and artistic dimensions, whose meaning is continually negotiated and reshaped. A central argument put forth is that a significant paradigm shift has occurred since the 1990s. The once dominant, often romanticized and oversimplified, idyllic image of 'Mediterranean harmony' has progressively given way to a more complex and interconnected understanding, symbolized by 'the net.' This 'net' represents the intricate web of interlinked urban centers, the proliferation of trans-governmental networks, the profound impact of diverse migratory movements across the region, and the resultant cultural fluidity that characterizes contemporary Mediterranean Spain. Furthermore, the book meticulously assesses the profound ways in which Mediterraneidad, specifically within the rich domain of music, has been transformed into both a significant site and a powerful signifier for a wide spectrum of pressing social and political issues. This includes, but is not limited to, the intricate formulations of distinct national and regional identities in Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, and Mallorca, with a particular emphasis on the critical role of music in reflecting and influencing the 2017 Catalan Independence process, which serves as a pivotal case study within the volume. To achieve its analytical breadth and depth, the authors employ a diverse and interdisciplinary array of methodologies, ranging from rigorous data-driven sociological approaches that quantify and analyze social patterns, to immersive ethnographic and anthropological tools that capture lived experiences and cultural nuances, alongside critical applications of feminist and gender theories that deconstruct power dynamics and representational practices. Beyond the musical focus, the authors also critically address the profound and rapidly evolving social landscape that began to take shape in Spain from the 1980s onwards, including the transformative effects of increasing global migrations which have reshaped demographics and cultural interactions, as well as the progressive dismantling of traditional gender dynamics and roles, leading to new forms of social organization and identity.
