Read Laura Commer's work to gain practical pedagogical insights into the dystopian elements of The Hunger Games and its effective application within the English as a Foreign Language classroom.
This seminar paper, completed in 2018 within the subject of Didactics for English - Literature, Works at the University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), received a grade of 1.0. Written in English, its primary objective is to identify and analyze the central dystopian elements prevalent in Suzanne Collins's novel The Hunger Games, and subsequently to determine its suitability and practical applicability within the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom setting. To achieve this, the study initially provides a succinct explanation of fundamental dystopian genre conventions, followed by a detailed analysis of their specific manifestation and impact throughout the narrative of The Hunger Games. Subsequently, the paper thoroughly examines the novel's pedagogical value, exploring both the opportunities it presents for fostering language acquisition and critical thinking, as well as potential challenges related to content complexity or cultural context for foreign language learners. Finally, the study proposes a range of adaptable teaching materials and practical methodological suggestions specifically tailored for use in a Leistungskurs within the German Oberstufe, concluding with an overall assessment of the novel's didactic potential.
