Samuel Rawson Gardiner (1829-1902) was an English historian, primarily recognized for his detailed and extensive work on the Stuart period in English history. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford, and later became a professor of modern history at King's College London. He dedicated a large part of his life to researching the 16th and 17th centuries, producing a series of volumes covering the reigns of James I, Charles I, and the English Civil War. His approach was meticulous, based on an exhaustive examination of primary sources. He is considered one of the most important historians of his era in the field of English political and constitutional history.
