Ken Follett
Ken Follett's masterful epic, "Never", offers a heart-pounding, globe-spanning thriller that intricately weaves present-day global tensions into a terrifyingly realistic drama of escalating conflict on the brink of world war.
New York Times Bestseller This new must-read epic from master storyteller Ken Follett transcends the typical thriller genre, unfolding as an intricate, action-packed, and truly globe-spanning drama. Set against the backdrop of our present-day world, it meticulously weaves together seemingly disparate events into a breathtaking narrative of international tension. As Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary, aptly describes it, "A compelling story, and only too realistic.” The novel opens with a stark warning from Pauline Green, the President of the United States, who sagely observes, “Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” This prescient statement sets the stage for Follett’s nerve-racking drama, where seemingly minor issues rapidly escalate into a global crisis. The seeds of this relentlessly escalating conflict are sown across multiple continents and disparate scenarios: a rapidly shrinking oasis deep within the Sahara Desert, sparking regional instability; the brazen theft of a cutting-edge US Army drone, raising alarming questions of technological vulnerability; the strategic significance of a remote, uninhabited Japanese island becoming a potential flashpoint; and the chilling revelation of one nation's clandestine cache of deadly chemical poisons, threatening global security. As the world teeters on the precipice of unimaginable conflict, a diverse and compelling cast of characters battles against the encroaching darkness, desperately struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war. Among them are a brilliant young woman intelligence officer, navigating the complex world of international espionage; a courageous spy embedded undercover within a dangerous jihadist network, risking everything for vital information; a sagacious and cunning Chinese spymaster, playing a high-stakes geopolitical game; and, at the very heart of the storm, Pauline Green, the beleaguered President of the United States, grappling with monumental global threats while simultaneously fending off a formidable populist rival in the upcoming presidential election. More than just a narrative, "Never" stands as an extraordinary novel, richly populated with unforgettable heroines and cunning villains, charismatic false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with profound cautionary wisdom, serving as a powerful reflection on the precariousness of our contemporary times and the myriad ways small failures can cascade into global catastrophe. This is a visceral, heart-pounding read that relentlessly transports readers to the very brink of the unimaginable, challenging perceptions and leaving a lasting impression.
