Synopsis

The Pillars of the Earth, undeniably Ken Follett's masterpiece, offers an exceptional evocation of the Middle Ages, a period marked by violent passions, complex political intrigues, and profound social changes. This 25th-anniversary commemorative edition includes a special foreword by the author, where he reflects on the impact and lasting power of his most celebrated novel. Follett, the great master of action and suspense narrative, immerses the reader in a fascinating medieval universe populated by kings, ladies, knights, intricate feudal struggles, imposing castles, and vibrant walled cities. The plot is woven around the monumental construction of a Gothic cathedral in Kingsbridge, which serves as the epicenter for an epic story of love, death, ambition, and redemption. The destinies of unforgettable characters such as Philip, the prior with the vision to build the cathedral; Tom, the master builder divided by his own contradictions; and the enigmatic Lady Aliena, marked by an unspeakable secret, intertwine in a masterful narrative tapestry. The novel explores the constant struggle between good and evil, which pits the Church against the State and brothers against brothers, in a context of anarchy and the quest for absolute power. From its striking beginning with the public hanging of an innocent man to its cathartic end with the humiliation of a king, The Pillars of the Earth is a historical saga that captivates with its ambitious scope and profound humanity, reaffirming Ken Follett's unwavering mastery of the written word and its universal appeal.
