Ken Follett
In the late 18th century, England is ruled by a conservative government that suppresses any attempt at rebellion. Across the English Channel, Napoleon Bonaparte is inexorably increasing his power. As war looms over Europe, the lives of Kingsbridge's inhabitants are about to change dramatically. Sal, a fearless spinner, witnesses a tragic accident that will turn her life upside down. The courageous Amos, a cloth merchant who prematurely inherited his father's business, will have to confront the terrible Hornbeam to repay his debts. He will be helped by Spade, an innovative weaver, and encouraged by the gentle Elsie, who is fighting to fund a school where poor children can learn to read and write. Amidst thwarted destinies, murderous jealousies, arbitrary justice, bloody war, and the industrial revolution, Ken Follett depicts with unparalleled virtuosity a generation that embodies the struggle for a future free from all oppression.
